The Human Design system
Ra Uru Hu, the primary messenger of the Human Design system was born Alan (Robert) Krakower in Montreal, Canada on April 9, 1948.
In January 1987, he had an unusual mystical experience followed by an encounter with “a Voice,” an intelligence far superior to anything he had ever experienced. This encounter lasted for eight days and nights during which he received a transmission of information—what is known today as the “Human Design System.”
In 1989, after his encounter with the Voice, Ra Uru Hu wrote the Rave I’Ching, the foundation upon which Human Design rests and the key to unlocking the code of our genetics. As the oldest of the Chinese classic texts, the I’Ching, or Book of Changes, is an ancient divination tool used for over three thousand years.
Ra dedicated the next 25 years of his life to the development and teaching of the System around the world,
Together with his family, he lived in the United States, Germany, and for most of the time on Ibiza, Spain where he passed away in March, 2011.
The Bodygraph (Rave Chart) is the visual essence of the Human Design System. It combines all of the HD information in a graphic synthesis, which can be grasped intuitively. The Rave Chart is a clear and simple depiction of the human structure. Everything in the graphic is related to the human body. It is like a wiring diagram that shows the connected information and gives us deep insights into our inner functioning.
Every Rave Chart contains centers, channels and gates with the 9 Centres each having gates 64 gates in total. When gates connect two centres together form a channel (circuitry).
The databank is the astrological information translated into the Hexagrams and Lines of the I’Ching and is then copied into the according Gates of the Bodygraph. e.g. Sun in 3°30’ Gemini – corresponds to Hexagram 20, 4th Line.
The first calculation, the personality (corresponding to the personality crystal substructure) uses the moment of birth (written in black, birth right side, data) and the second calculation is the design(corresponding to the design crystal substructure) uses the moment exactly 88° of the sun (approx. 3 months) before birth (written is red, left side).
At the Design-time the development of child’s body in the womb has reached a stage when it can take in its ‘soul’, its awareness. To put it figuratively: the biogenetic ‘vehicle’ takes in the ‘passenger’, the awareness of the personality. The Personality-data represents the conscious and is shown in black, the Design-data represents the unconscious and is shown in red.
The Passenger and the Vehicle: Learning to See
Advanced Human Design is not about knowing more—it’s about seeing clearly. In the Rave Cartography Teacher Manual, Ra urges us to remember: “Your mind’s brilliance cannot save you.” The mind’s role is not to make decisions, but to witness the ride. True seeing begins when we dis-identify from the not-self mind and recognize the fixed architecture of our Definition.
The four views of advanced chart analysis—Type, Authority, Definition, and Profile—are essential entry points. But from there, we move toward seeing the mechanics of openness as the very places where homogenization distorts perception. The mind's desire for certainty, especially when located in open centers like the Head and Ajna, creates mental strategies that fuel the not-self.
The surrender to form principle—Strategy and Authority—is the first step. But the deeper awakening comes when we begin to measure frequency itself, through the observation of Color transference, cognitive distractions, and the embodied movement of the form through environment and relationship.
Advanced Human Design and the Mechanics of Awakening
Human Design is often introduced as a practical tool for decision-making through Strategy and Authority. But beyond this foundational layer lies a profoundly sophisticated map of human consciousness—one that offers a systemic architecture for awakening, differentiation, and collective transformation.
Advanced Human Design goes far beyond Type and Profile into the realms of Color, Tone, Base, and the orchestration of group dynamics through trans-auric forms. Here, we explore some of the deeper dimensions of the Human Design System that guide personal and collective mutation.
The Architecture of Differentiation: From Lines to Base
As Ra Uru Hu shared in the American Professional Human Design Workshop, “The line is just the surface. The deeper you go, the more you inspire others”. What appears as a simple line in a gate conceals a substructure composed of Color (motivation and dietary regimen), Tone (cognition and sensory perception), and Base (binary consciousness). This substructure forms the foundation of the Variable system—a crucial part of the advanced analysis known as the Four Radical Transformations.
Color is the first layer under the Line and dictates how one is intended to be nourished (Design side) and how one perceives and acts in the world (Personality side). Tone establishes the binary architecture of perception—rooted in cognition and sense modality. And Base? The unchanging root of one's crystalline structure.
When you begin to integrate these layers, differentiation is no longer theoretical—it becomes viscerally experiential. As Ra often warned, however, “Understanding does not equal transformation”. It is living the mechanics that initiates change.
